After months of planning and weeks of waiting for the Sport England decision, SYCSA was rewarded by being given funding to buy 2 RS Vision dinghies.

They arrived on a glorious sunny day in June and were sailed within a week by our enthusiastic sailors.

The dinghies were needed to support the delivery of our Enable Youth project:

Our bid to Sport England highlighted the following opportunities:

SYCSA and Durleigh Sailing Club was approached by the coordinator of Sedgemoor Learning Alliance group of schools and the Somerset Children’s University who has conducted extensive consultations with over 2000 children and their parents. One area identified by these children and young people as being of particular interest is to extend opportunities for locally based Watersports. As a result the coordinator, Mike King, approached us as our club is within 2 miles of most of these young people and has an outstanding reputation for providing effective sailing and Watersports tuition.

After being granted RYA Sailabilty status in 2008, we ran a very well supported open afternoon for disabled sailors in 2009. This successful event attracted over 40 disabled young people and their carers. The session led to several requests to provide extra dedicated sailing sessions for the disabled in 2010.

A third group of youngsters, from our successful Saturday Sailing Club, developed their sailing skills in 2009, so that they are now ready to progress onto more challenging dinghies than those that we currently own.

Combining these three situations, purchasing 2 RS Vision dinghies would enable SYCSA to provide an extra challenge for the more able sailors, while freeing up space in our Wayfarer fleet. Using small sails on the Wayfarer's will provide an ideal training vehicle for SEN youngsters and the disabled youngsters and their carers.

This project will put SYCSA in a very strong position to meet all of these identified needs plus GROW, SUSTAIN and ACHIEVE EXCELLENCE.
