September 2005 saw the second batch of 6
youngsters from Otterhampton Primary School achieve their RYA Stage 1 Young Sailors
award.
- The first group of 6 children completed their course successfully
in 2004, which is the first year that this project ran.
- These courses were run by SYCSA
and sponsored by Combwich Cruising Club. Bill Johnson of the Combwich club
raised the sponsorship money from local companies and provided the youngsters
with a place on the course.
- To gain their place each youngster had to make an original
piece of artwork, which was judged by Bill and his group. The successful students
were guided through their RYA recognized course by SYCSA Instructors Lisa
Hodge and Amy Salter. Lisa is seen here
presenting the youngsters with their certificates.
- The students sailed in Optimist dinghies, which were given
to SYCSA by the South West Region of the RYA.
- After the course, several of the young sailors went on to
join the SYCSA Saturday Club to extend their
sailing skills. The instructors Lisa & Amy are themselves a product of
the SYCSA Saturday Club.
- Well done to all concerned another bright outcome has been
achieved.
