The young racing sailors from SYCSA are having a great season in 2011.
The SYCSA/DSC Race Club went from strength to strength with regular monthly race training and racing events. The youngsters improvement in tactics and sailing knowledge was very noticeable as the season progressed. The winner of the 2011 Race Series was Joseph Brown.
Luke Robertson and Izzy Berkley were selected for the South West Region Zone Squads in 2010 and continued to sail in many events over 2011.
In the November end of season Durleigh leg of the Somerset Square Race Series, we cleaned up with Izzy winning the leg and Luke coming a close second in the junior event.
Luke sailed his own Topper to greater and greater heights, winning the Topper Traveller at Paignton in a fleet of 41 boats. He moved up through the fleet as the season progressed. His final accolade was to be selected for the National Intermediate Junior Squad for 2012.
Luke Warman also made his entry into the Topper Traveller series, gaining valuable experience and finally being selected for the South West Region Zone Squad.
Izzy sailed her own Optimist in the National events and was inspirational in getting 3 other young sailors to take part in the Regional Optimist training and racing events.
She ended the season on a high after being selected for the Optimist Development squad.
The enthusiasm of the young sailors was contagious, so during the season several very young Optimist sailors broke into the racing circuit. This ended up with 3 new sailors Caitlin, Holly and Ewan going to the SW Zone Championship at Restronguet on 24/25 Sept.
They had a great time, ending their season on a high and taking several prizes on the way. ......................
Well done all of you!
