After a long road trip to Cornwall, Izzy Berkley sailed one of the SYCSA Optimist's in an Optimist Open weekend at Restronguet.
It was a fabulous weekend.
There were less boats than expected due to a clash of events, but still over 25 boats took part. Izzy was put with 10 of the Main Fleet for Saturday’s coaching and learned loads. The other sailors were zone squad level and she was generally mid-fleet.
On Sunday it blew like crazy, 25 knots gusts. She left with the main fleet then left them to brave the swell, squalls and high waves (not commonly found at Durleigh). Instead she joined the ‘Regatta Fleet’ of 10 others who raced closer inshore. It was just as windy, but the sea was a bit flatter.
After 4 races: with 3 x 2nd and 1 x discard due to parted toe straps. She finished 2nd overall and was 1st Girl.
On the way home, it was difficult to fit her grin into the car, not only that, but she came home with prizes!
