The Tidal Experience week 2012 in Plymouth
Saturday 28th July to Saturday 4th August
Sailing development for SYCSA volunteers
Each year since 1996, SYCSA has given its Instructors and their families the chance of sailing on the sea.
Our first visits were to St Just in Roseland, Cornwall. When the visits were training events as well as family occasions, where whole families had a summer sailing break together.
In 2002, we broke with tradition and sailed out of the Mountbatten Centre at Plymouth. The better showers and launching facilities proved to be a great hit with all of the participants, so we have been back ever since.
SYCSA trails boats to the area to keep the cost down, this also gives the sailors a familiar boat to sail.
The setting is beautiful, with many accessible beaches, coves and harbours.
An experienced Senior Instructor leads the group, usually consisting of about 30 people including Instructors, younger sailors and parents. They plan one day expeditions, then set off and sail to the designated area, in this way they visit many of the local tidal anchorage's.
We no longer run training sessions during this week, hence these sessions provide an ideal opportunity for our Instructors and Assistant Instructors to gain personal sailing development in a variety of tidal conditions.
There is usually an onshore day to visit local sites.
The whole experience is excellent. It allows the group to work together and develops the confidence of all participants.
If you would like to attend this development week you are eligible to apply to the Committee for a place if you:
- are an Instructor, Assistant Instructor or are powerboat qualified
- an active registered SYCSA volunteer and a competent RYA Level 3 sailor
- are flexible in your approach to sailing times
- like camping
- are willing to "muck in" and support others
- enjoy good company
There is a limit
to the amount of boat and camp site spaces, so the Committee will allocate places
according to available resources and your volunteering history for SYCSA.
